YWCP 8th Annual Gala
Calvary Presbyterian Church, San Francisco
March 14, 2020 • Evening
The annual YWCP gala is always a glamorous evening featuring a wine and cheese reception, a full concert by the Young Women’s Chorus of San Francisco, and a sit-down dinner and live auction. This year’s theme is “Discovering a New World” and the concert will include Mexican Baroque music with strings from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Morelia, where YWC will tour this summer. Morelia is the home of the Conservatorio de las Rosas, which has a unique history in the Americas – it started in the 1700s as an orphanage for unwanted girls, but quickly became a highly-regarded conservatory of music where great composers wrote challenging music for girls’ voices. At the Gala, we are also “discovering” new music written for young women, and will perform a commissioned arrangement of an old Mexican hymn by Frank La Rocca, a work with viola by New York composer Caroline Shaw, and a piece in Persian with cellist Emil Miland by Minnesota composer Abbie Betinis.
We hope you will come and enjoy the music and the festivities that support YWCP’s choral music education program.
Thank you ACFEA for being a 2020 Gala Sponsor!
This concert is sponsored in part by San Francisco Grants for the Arts.
